LONG ISLAND OPINION; E. L. Doctorow and Other Famous Writers I Have Never Met
''What are the chances of [E. L. Doctorow] flying to Cleveland today?'' I asked my husband. My husband is not a statistician, but he calculated the chances were rather slight. ''If it can happen to [Pam], it can happen to me,'' I said. I set out for La Guardia Airport with high hopes. ''Bald doesn't matter,'' I said. ''Does he have a sense of humor? That's much more important.'' I don't think anyone had told her that before. When we got off the plane, I walked very slowly. I wanted to see the bridegroom for myself. He was tall, broad and with a heavy beard. He wore a hat so I couldn't see his bald head and it was impossible to know if he had a sense of humor. Silently, I wished them well. On my flight home, I again thought about E. L. Doctorow. If he had come to Cleveland, albeit on a different flight from mine, he might be on my plane returning home. I took my seat and looked around. To my amazement, I actually recognized a man walking down the aisle toward me. He was a former member of the school board in my community, so his photograph was often in the local paper. He also had a son who graduated from high school with my son. ''Hello,'' I said with delight. ''In all my years of flying, I've never before met someone I knew on my airplane.''
Double or nothing : with the two and only Kelly twins
Cherishing everything about being identical twins, Arlene and Ilene are astonished when they discover that they do not share everything in like manner, from ice cream preferences to favorite nail polish colors.
